The list goes on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/travel-three-guyanas\/\"><strong>Guyana<\/strong><\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/nenets-travel\/\"><strong>extreme north of Russia<\/strong><\/a>, Against the Compass has been traveling to remote locations since 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of these remote locations, for one reason or another, happen to be in countries ruled by controversial regimes, usually not particularly good friends with the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, we are often facing criticism, with some accusing us of supporting those governments simply by traveling there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article explains why there&#8217;s nothing inherently wrong with visiting such countries \u2014 and why, as long as you&#8217;re a conscious and respectful traveler, <strong>you should feel free to explore the world without self-censorship.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/PIN-1-Why-you-should-travel-the-World-without-censorship-685x1024.avif\" type=\"image\/avif\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/PIN-1-Why-you-should-travel-the-World-without-censorship-685x1024.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/PIN-1-Why-you-should-travel-the-World-without-censorship-685x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Why you should travel the World without censorship\" class=\"wp-image-54246\" style=\"width:458px;height:auto\"><\/picture><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You shouldn\u2019t be selective with your principles, double standards aren\u2019t good<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-background\" style=\"background-color:#eaeaea\"><strong>Fact: <\/strong>The countries typically not accepted to travel are shaped by geopolitics, rather than ethics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/russia-travel\/\"><strong>Russia<\/strong><\/a> is arguably the country that faces the greatest stigma as a travel destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After our recent trips to the <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/chechnya-travel\/\"><strong>North Caucasus <\/strong><\/a>republics and Siberia, I received more messages than ever \u2014 not about the places themselves, but about the supposed controversy of traveling to what many now see as the West\u2019s number-one enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people were polite, expressing disagreement while still respecting my decision. Others, however, were openly hostile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What I find interesting is that some of the most vocal critics were the same travelers who have always been keen to <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/travel-syria\/\"><strong>travel to Syria<\/strong><\/a>, or who already traveled there after 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad murdered hundreds of thousands of people, while forcing millions to flee the country. His brutal repression originated into a conflict which has not ended yet, since there are still war zones where people live under constant threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So if we look purely at the numbers \u2014 at the scale of violence, repression, and humanitarian crisis \u2014 wouldn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/syria-itinerary\/\"><strong>Syria<\/strong><\/a> be an even more ethically difficult destination than <a href=\"https:\/\/expeditions.againstthecompass.com\/destinations\/russia\/\"><strong>Russia<\/strong><\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why is it OK to visit <a href=\"https:\/\/expeditions.againstthecompass.com\/destinations\/turkmenistan\/\"><strong>Turkmenistan<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/travel-eritrea\/\"><strong>Eritrea<\/strong><\/a> and North Korea, the 3 most repressive countries in the world, but it\u2019s not OK to <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/russia-travel\/\"><strong>travel to Russia<\/strong><\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can\u2019t turn a blind eye to what is happening to <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/travel-ukraine\/\"><strong>Ukraine<\/strong><\/a> but just because the Russian Government is the biggest strategic rival of the West, doesn\u2019t mean that the lives of Syrians and Afghan women are less worth than Ukrainians\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we apply outrage selectively, we\u2019re not standing on principle \u2014 we\u2019re just echoing foreign policy and Western media headlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Saint-Basils-Cathedral-Moscow-is-beautiful-just-as-it-used-to-be-back-in-2022-1024x682.avif\" type=\"image\/avif\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Saint-Basils-Cathedral-Moscow-is-beautiful-just-as-it-used-to-be-back-in-2022-1024x682.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Saint-Basils-Cathedral-Moscow-is-beautiful-just-as-it-used-to-be-back-in-2022-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Saint Basil&#039;s Cathedral\" class=\"wp-image-54225\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Moscow is beautiful, just as it used to be back in 2022<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Travel is something personal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/is-afghanistan-safe\/\"><strong>Afghanistan<\/strong><\/a> is the country in the world where women&#8217;s rights are most violated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traveling is very personal so, if a certain traveler doesn\u2019t want to <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/country\/afghanistan\/\"><strong>travel to Afghanistan<\/strong><\/a> because of that, we should respect it because that\u2019s their decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, however, don\u2019t let others shame you for <a href=\"https:\/\/expeditions.againstthecompass.com\/destinations\/afghanistan\/\"><strong>wanting to travel to Afghanistan<\/strong><\/a> during Taliban rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember that you aren\u2019t traveling there to violate women\u2019s rights further, but to learn, observe, break stereotypes and become wiser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, it\u2019s important to stay sensitive to the struggles of the people living under such regimes, and to travel in ways that support them, not their oppressors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-background\" style=\"background-color:#eaeaea\">Check: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/travel-afghanistan\/\">How to travel to Afghanistan<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Afghan-women-in-the-city-of-Kandahar-one-of-the-hardest-places-in-the-world-to-live-as-a-woman-768x1024.avif\" type=\"image\/avif\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Afghan-women-in-the-city-of-Kandahar-one-of-the-hardest-places-in-the-world-to-live-as-a-woman-768x1024.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Afghan-women-in-the-city-of-Kandahar-one-of-the-hardest-places-in-the-world-to-live-as-a-woman-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Afghan women in the city of Kandahar, one of the hardest places in the world to live as a woman\" class=\"wp-image-54234\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Afghan women in the <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/visiting-kandahar\/\"><strong>city of Kandahar<\/strong><\/a>, one of the hardest places in the world to live as a woman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It\u2019s not the local people\u2019s fault. Travel to break stereotypes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to always separate people from Governments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaders like Netanyahu are responsible for military actions in Gaza and yes, he has a large support among Israelis but at the same time, millions oppose his agenda and are horrified by all the violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many Israelis I know feel extremely ashamed of the war in <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/travel-gaza\/\"><strong>Gaza<\/strong><\/a>, just as I\u2019ve met Russians in Moscow who are heartbroken about what\u2019s happening in <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/country\/ukraine\/\"><strong>Ukraine<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nobody likes war, or to live under sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traveling to these countries allows you to get an unbiased perspective of the local\u2019s opinion on the matter, something you\u2019ll never see in the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It builds bridges and breaks down stereotypes, which might even work both ways, since it shows locals that not all foreigners are hostile, arrogant, or judgmental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Women-Yamalia-A-nomad-woman-from-the-Siberian-tundra.-What-does-she-have-to-do-with-the-war-in-Ukraine--1024x682.avif\" type=\"image\/avif\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Women-Yamalia-A-nomad-woman-from-the-Siberian-tundra.-What-does-she-have-to-do-with-the-war-in-Ukraine--1024x682.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Women-Yamalia-A-nomad-woman-from-the-Siberian-tundra.-What-does-she-have-to-do-with-the-war-in-Ukraine--1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Women Yamalia\" class=\"wp-image-54236\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A nomad woman from the Siberian tundra. What does she have to do with the war in Ukraine-<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You actually do more for the country than any <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">armchair activist<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An <em>armchair activist<\/em> refers to the person who likes to express strong opinions about political issues on social media but doesn\u2019t take any action beyond that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/visit-world-countries\/\"><strong>travel to countries<\/strong><\/a> with controversial regimes and like to post about it on Instagram, you are likely to be the target of an armchair activist, that\u2019s what they do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I mentioned in the previous section, don\u2019t let others shame you for your travels, you may actually be contributing more than they realize, as long as you are a responsible traveler, of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By backpacking in a country independently, having genuine local interactions, and spending money in local, small businesses, you are engaging more with local humans that most do from their couch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind that this isn\u2019t a self-congratulatory statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are travelers, not activists or humanitarian workers but still, I strongly believe that a responsible traveler leaves a more meaningful footprint than what most people on Instagram believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Friends-in-Afghanistan-878x1024.avif\" type=\"image\/avif\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Friends-in-Afghanistan-878x1024.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Friends-in-Afghanistan-878x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Friends in Afghanistan\" class=\"wp-image-54238\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The guy on the left offered me to stay with him when I traveled independently to the <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/jam-minaret\/\"><strong>Minaret of Jam<\/strong><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Those Governments benefit very little from your travels<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Armchair activists tend to argue that no matter how responsibly you travel, part of your money will always end up in the hands of the Government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure, that\u2019s actually true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During Bashar al-Assad\u2019s regime, for example, the cost of the <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/travel-syria\/#2\"><strong>Syrian visa<\/strong><\/a> for Europeans was \u20ac70.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That money went directly to an evil Government but, are those \u20ac70 making any difference?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In reality, think about it as it was a trade-off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You pay a \u20ac70 visa fee but then, you spend cash \u20ac1500 in family-owned hotels, local restaurants, and independent guides, while having genuine human interactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No trip is ethically perfect, but a responsible traveler will certainly bring more positive than harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Bazaar-Aleppo-Buying-xaatar-from-a-locally-owned-shop-in-Aleppo.-Buying-in-these-places-makes-a-big-difference-1024x683.avif\" type=\"image\/avif\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Bazaar-Aleppo-Buying-xaatar-from-a-locally-owned-shop-in-Aleppo.-Buying-in-these-places-makes-a-big-difference-1024x683.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Bazaar-Aleppo-Buying-xaatar-from-a-locally-owned-shop-in-Aleppo.-Buying-in-these-places-makes-a-big-difference-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Bazaar Aleppo\" class=\"wp-image-54240\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Buying xaatar from a locally-owned shop in <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/visit-aleppo\/\"><strong>Aleppo<\/strong><\/a>. places like <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/russia-visa\/\"><strong>Russia<\/strong><\/a>, but for war-torn countries like <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/yemen-travel\/\"><strong>Yemen<\/strong><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/syria-itinerary\/\"><strong>Syria<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first time I ever <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/country\/yemen\/\"><strong>traveled to Yemen<\/strong><\/a>, someone told me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/expeditions.againstthecompass.com\/destinations\/yemen\/\"><strong>Traveling to Yemen<\/strong><\/a> is like slapping on the faces of all the families who have lost someone in the war.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you ever asked Yemenis how they feel about foreign visitors?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my opinion, making such strong statements on behalf of people you have never talked to comes close to colonialism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There isn\u2019t any tourism industry left in Yemen, locals barely benefit financially from your visit, but there are few countries left in the world where where people are so excited to see a foreigner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In places like <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/socotra-travel\/\"><strong>Yemen<\/strong><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/syria-safety\/\"><strong>Syria<\/strong><\/a>, your presence can feel like a sign that the outside world isn\u2019t forgetting them, or even an inflection point that their country is getting better, but that\u2019s something you won\u2019t understand unless you see it with your own eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter
