waters, arched coconut palms, and empty white-sand beaches.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before traveling to Salalah, I had never imagined that such breathtaking landscapes existed <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/countries-middle-east-safe-travel\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><strong>in the Middle East<\/strong><\/a>, but they really do and driving along Dhofar\u2019s coastline, wild camping in such unspoiled places, is a wonderful travel experience like nowhere else in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On our trip, we drove the entire 400km coastal road, all the way to the Yemeni border, not without stopping in several Omani villages and fishing settlements, where we were continuously blessed by the local hospitality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some important archaeological sites too, as this part of Oman used to be a major trading center in the ancient world, home to an important and large harbor from where tonnes of <strong><a aria-label=\"frankincense where shipped across the world (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Incense_trade_route\" target=\"_blank\">frankincense where shipped across the world<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But perhaps, the most unique event that makes this magical destination appear in the tourist maps is that Dhofar experiences an actual tropical monsoon season that runs from June to August, during which its landscapes are covered by mist and fairy meadows, the reason why Dhofar is filled with papaya and mango plantations all year round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a world apart from the northern dry lands and the rest of the Gulf Monarchies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In your <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/travel-oman\/\" season (June to August)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Khareef<\/em> is what the locals call their monsoon season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Actually, <em>khareef<\/em> literally means <em>monsoon<\/em> in Arabic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As strange as it sounds, <em>khareef<\/em> is the busiest season, when the grassy plains within and outside of Salalah are suddenly overrun by thousands of Omanis, Saudis and Emiratis, seeking a cool breeze from the overwhelmingly high temperatures that tend to prevail in the rest of the Arabian Peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Khareef<\/em>, however, is not like other monsoon seasons with strong winds and heavy rains &#8211; like in South East Asia for example &#8211; but in Salalah, it just rains very lightly all day long, and that\u2019s why most Arabs opt for wild camping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think <em>khareef<\/em> season is a great time to travel to Salalah, not only because you will witness a particularly unique event, but also because you will have the chance to meet many Arabs in their best holiday mood, who will definitely invite you to join them over some grilled kebabs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only downside we found was that sometimes, the dense fog would not let us enjoy the beautiful landscapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><picture><source This is me back in 2014, the first time I ever traveled to Salalah!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting Salalah during the rest of the year<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Any time is a good time to travel to Salalah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In September, right after the monsoon season, its landscapes are at their greenest, but the weather can be pretty hot and humid, even though it\u2019s never as hot as in the northern part of Oman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Winter is a good time too but the later you go, the less green it will be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second time I visited Dhofar was in November, and it was great. It was relatively hot and dry during the day, and the perfect temperature at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are planning to travel more inland, towards the <a class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/liwa-oasis-moreeb-dune-tal-mireb\/\"><strong>Empty Quarter<\/strong><\/a>, it\u2019s advisable to come in winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/IMG_31381-1024x753.avif\" type=\"image\/avif\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/IMG_31381-1024x753.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/IMG_31381-1024x753.jpg\" alt class=\"wp-image-26281\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Any time is a good time to travel to Salalah but it will never be as green as during khareef season<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3\">\ud83d\udeeb How to get to Salalah<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Salalah is a faraway city, more than 1000km <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/visit-muscat\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><strong>from Muscat<\/strong><\/a>. It\u2019s a very long 1-day drive, or even 2, depending on how fast you go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, something you need to know is that the road that links Muscat with Salalah goes through an empty desert for more than 800km, with no tourist attractions in between, so you can\u2019t really break the journey into more than 1 day, even though there are a few road motels on the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The road, however, is in good condition and there are enough service stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to travel from Muscat to Salalah<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By car &#8211;<\/strong> As I said, it\u2019s a 1000km drive, so start early in the morning. If you want to cut it short by 160km, you may start driving from the city of <strong><a aria-label=\"Nizwa (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nizwa\" target=\"_blank\">Nizwa<\/a><\/strong>, a popular destination in northern Oman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By bus &#8211; <\/strong>It\u2019s possible to travel to Salalah from Muscat by bus. That\u2019s what I did on my 7th visit to Oman. Buses leave from the bus station located in the Ruwi area. There are several bus companies, all of them charging between 10\u20ac and 20\u20ac, depending on the level of comfort they offer. We did it once, on the way back, entering via Al Ain. It takes forever, and I don\u2019t recommend doing it in one day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By bus &#8211; <\/strong>There is no direct bus <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/dubai-itinerary\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><strong>from Dubai to Salalah<\/strong><\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/dubai-itinerary\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\">;<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/dubai-itinerary\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><strong> <\/strong><\/a>you need to stop in Muscat first, and take a second bus on the day after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flying to Salalah<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Salalah has an international airport, with daily flights from Dubai, <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/things-to-do-in-riyadh\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><strong>Riyadh<\/strong><\/a>, Muscat and Jeddah, among other cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Traveling to Salalah by boat from Berbera (Somaliland)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When I was <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/travel-somaliland\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><strong>traveling in Somaliland<\/strong><\/a>, I met a couple from the USA who had come to Somalia by cargo boat from Salalah, and it\u2019s possible to do it the other way around as well. The only thing is that there isn\u2019t a fixed schedule and, for example, they had to wait in Salalah for 3 weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/somaliland-itinerary\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><strong>Things to do in Somaliland<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The coastal road, from Salalah to Sur<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you look on the map, there is a coastal road that goes all the way from Salalah to Sur, a coastal city east of Oman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are self-driving, I definitely recommend taking this way. It takes much longer, but it\u2019s definitely worth it and, if you are wild camping, accommodation should not be an issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second time I visited Salalah, I actually <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/backpacking-oman-budget\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><strong>hitchhiked back along this road<\/strong><\/a>. It took me more than 3 days, but man, what an experience. It\u2019s part of Dhofar\u2019s UNESCO World Heritage site.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sultan\u2019s Palace &#8211;<\/strong> This is Sultan Qaboos Palace (may he rest in peace). You can\u2019t get in, but it\u2019s cool to check it out from outside, and it\u2019s right next to Al Haffa Souq anyways.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fcc3b7;font-size:18px\"><strong>About frankincense<\/strong><br>Frankincense is a resin, or gum, that comes from the frankincense tree, and was considered one of the most relevant, important and sought-after trading goods in the ancient world, used in the past mainly for medical purposes. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unchartedbackpacker.com\/the-frankincense-trail-salalah-oman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Because of frankincense<\/a><\/strong>, Dhofar was considered to be one of the richest regions in the world more than 2000 thousand years ago, as thousands of tonnes were shipped every year to Rome, India, and many other places. By the way, this area is <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/is-oman-safe\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><strong>as safe as the rest of Oman<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can easily drive all the way to Dalkut (the border town) and come back to Salalah on the same day, stopping in a few worthwhile villages and view-points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mughsayl &#8211; <\/strong>The first landmark you will find is Mughsayl, home to some pretty impressive blowholes but unless you come here during monsoon season, there won\u2019t be much going on. Otherwise, just drive through it before you start ascending Jabal Qamar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Shaat &#8211; <\/strong>This is perhaps, the most jaw-dropping view point in all Oman. Keep in mind that you need to get off the main road for 5 km. The perfect place to finish your day before driving back to Salalah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fcc3b7\"><strong>Dhofar curious fact &#8211; <\/strong>Dhofar has the largest population of camels in the world. They are literally everywhere, unlike northern Oman where you see goats. Camel meat is a big deal here as well, and it\u2019s typically served in most restaurants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Dalkut-Oman-1024x683.avif\" type=\"image\/avif\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Dalkut-Oman-1024x683.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Dalkut-Oman-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Dalkut Oman\" class=\"wp-image-26283\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Somewhere in Dalkut<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"53\">3 &#8211; What to do East of Salalah<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The area east of Salalah is less breathtaking landscape-wise but its beautiful towns and historical sites make it more culturally interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may also do it in one day but I personally spent one night in Sadah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/DSC_0660-1024x683.avif\" type=\"image\/avif\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/DSC_0660-1024x683.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/DSC_0660-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Mirbat\" class=\"wp-image-26259\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Somewhere in Mirbat, Salalah<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Taqah &#8211; <\/strong>Taqah is the first town you find after Salalah. Nothing very exciting other than this was an important port, so there are some old buildings from their more prosperous times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Khor Rori &#8211;<\/strong> The most important archeological site in Dhofar, the ruins of the <strong><a aria-label=\"ancient city of Sumhuram (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Khor_Rori\" target=\"_blank\">ancient city of Sumhuram<\/a><\/strong>, founded in response to the rising importance of the frankincense trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mirbat &#8211; <\/strong>The largest town after Salalah, Mirbat is home to a pretty interesting and busy fishing harbor, with plenty of picture opportunities. The town\u2019s architecture is also pretty neat and there is a mosque (Bin Ali\u2019s) which is worth stopping for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Sadah-Oman-1024x683.avif\" type=\"image\/avif\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Sadah-Oman-1024x683.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Sadah-Oman-1024x683.jpg\" alt class=\"wp-image-26287\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sadah, Oman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sadah &#8211; <\/strong>Sadah is a small, slow-life coastal village with not much to do, but the people here are great and I stayed here because I met a kind family who invited me to stay in their house. The surroundings, however, are beautiful and, besides the beautiful coast, we also visited a camel farm nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Beyond Sadah &#8211;<\/strong> As I said before, I continued over this coastal road all the way to Muscat. Beyond Sadah, there aren\u2019t any villages of interest but the landscapes are some of the most unspoiled in all Dhofar, much less visited than the ones in the south. If you are self-driving, I recommend going all the way to Ash Shuwaymiyyah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/places-to-see-in-salalah-1024x683.avif\" type=\"image\/avif\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/places-to-see-in-salalah-1024x683.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/places-to-see-in-salalah-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"places to see in Salalah\" class=\"wp-image-26261\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">We found this extremely wild beach somewhere between Sadah and Ash Shuwaymiyyah<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"54\">4 &#8211; Places to visit north of Salalah<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the area north of Salalah, towards the Saudi Arabian border, you find the Lost City of Ubar and the Empty Quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Geographically, this area has nothing to do with the tropical southern part but still, it&#8217;s one of the cool places to visit near Salalah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Lost City of Ubar<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Often called the Atlantis of the Sands, a name given by Lawrence of Arabia, Ubar is a legendary lost city located in the deserts north of Salalah, at the edge of the Empty Quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only <strong><a aria-label=\"discovered in 1992 (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1992\/02\/05\/world\/on-the-trail-from-the-sky-roads-point-to-a-lost-city.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"rank-math-link\">discovered in 1992<\/a><\/strong>, Ubar used to be a main trading post for frankincense and is believed to be the Iram of the Pillars, a lost city mentioned in the Quran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, from Salalah, you can visit the ruins of Ubar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/lost-city-of-ubar-853x1024.avif\" type=\"image\/avif\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/lost-city-of-ubar-853x1024.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/lost-city-of-ubar-853x1024.jpg\" alt=\"The Lost City of Ubar\" class=\"wp-image-26289\" style=\"object-fit:cover\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Lost City of Ubar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Empty Quarter<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Dhofar province is also the gate to the Empty Quarter &#8211; aka Rub&#8217; al Khali &#8211; a desert spread across Oman, <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/places-visit-saudi-arabia-itinerary\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><strong>Saudi Arabia<\/strong><\/a> and the United Arab Emirates, characterized as the largest sea of sand dunes in the world, and the most impressive place to visit in Dhofar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I personally didn\u2019t visit this part of the Empty Quarter, mainly because you have to go on a tour, and I had already visited it <a class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/liwa-oasis-moreeb-dune-tal-mireb\/\"><strong>on the United Arab Emirates side<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, you can drive to the beginning of it (that\u2019s what I did), after visiting the ancient City of Ubar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having an experienced guide is mandatory, even if you have your own 4&#215;4.
