from visiting otherworldly baroque monasteries to trying to sneak into a tank factory; and from having an espresso in the refined <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/visit-lviv\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><strong>Old Town of Lviv<\/strong><\/a> to having lunch in a Vietnamese neighborhood inhabited by Vietnamese refugees invited by the USSR as a favor to Ho Chi Min; Kyiv and Lviv &#8211; are already a reason by themselves to <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/travel-ukraine\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><strong>visit Ukraine<\/strong><\/a> and, with a few more days, you can also get a real glimpse of what rural and Soviet Ukraine looks like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is my recommendation of what places should you visit in Ukraine, based on the number of days you have. Of course, you can combine them, depending on your preference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ukraine in 4 or 5 days: Stick to Kyiv and around<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you only have a few days for backpacking through in Ukraine, I recommend you stay in Kyiv, since the city is big enough to keep you busy for several days, plus you can do some great day trips to the infamous Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and Cherniviv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><picture><source for backpacking around Ukraine, I recommend you get into the Ukrainian mountains, the Carpathians, and do some proper sightseeing by visiting the castles and monasteries around Lviv and Kamianets Soviet!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If planning accordingly, in 3 weeks you can visit a fair amount of the country and, if interested in the Soviet Heritage and off the beaten track Ukraine (Against the Compass readers love it), I would first recommend you spare 1 or 2 extra days in both Lviv and Kyiv and, then, visit the city of Kharkiv and the former nuclear launch facility near class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where to start your Ukraine tour itinerary?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lviv and Kyiv are the most obvious choices when choosing a starting point, for the simple reason that they have the largest number of international flight connections. Odessa has some international flights too. I actually flew out from Odessa <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/visit-minsk\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><strong>to Minsk<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are backpacking around Europe, however, and enter Ukraine overland, you might start from a different city. Great time in Pochaiv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the way, for either lunch or dinner, the restaurant\u2019s monastery is great and cheap. It wasn\u2019t a smart choice, as I remember waiting at the bus station for almost 3 hours for the bus to depart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The advantage of going by bus, however, is that it drops you at the same bus station with buses going to Pochaiv, which is around 2km walk from the main train station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Going to Pochaiv on day trip by public transportation isn\u2019t convenient. Ivano-Frankivsk, the Carpathians gateway<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The mountain region south of Ivano-Frankivsk resisted Soviet occupation until 1960 so, in an attempt to alleviate Ukrainian nationalism, the Soviets decided to rename the city after the famous Ukrainian poet Ivano-Frankivsk; <\/strong>This is the most developed town in the Carpathians and the most ready to host tourists. There is a tourist office where you can get information and plan your treks, either independently or with a guided tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mount Hoverla &#8211; <\/strong>Hoverla is the tallest mountain in Ukraine (2061m). You can can climb up and down it in one day and there is a guesthouse right at the beginning of the trail. Otherwise, Vorokhta is the largest closest town and the official base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bukovel &#8211; <\/strong>Best ski resort in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yasinya and Rakhiv &#8211; <\/strong>The area located on the other side of Mount Hoverla is actual off the beaten track Carpathians, where you will find the remotest and most traditional villages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kolomiya &#8211;<\/strong> The largest town close to Kosiv, and an unavoidable stop for continuing to Chernivtsi. The town itself is pretty and it has a famous market selling all types of Hutsul handicrafts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to move around the Carpathians<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Pretty much any village can be reached by marshrutka. Otherwise, hitchhiking is also a common option among locals, but expect to pay a small fee, which tends to be equal to a marshrutka ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is also a train running from Yaremche to Vorokhta, which then continues west towards the area on the other side of Mount Hoverla. From there, you can take a second one towards the city of Chernivtsi, from you will take the third one to Kamianets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">If you have time, I also suggest spending one night in Chernivtsi. On the first time, I was there in transit <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/travel-transnistria\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\">on my way to Transnistria<\/a><\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/visit-moldova\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><strong>Moldova<\/strong><\/a>. The Strategic Missile Museum, top place to visit in Ukraine<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is so bloody awesome: an actual nuclear missile launch facility, no kidding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the dissolution of the USSR, Ukraine held approximately 30% of the total Soviet nuclear arsenal, including 40 underground silos (missile launch facilities) in Mykolaiv Oblast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1994, however, after Ukraine joined the <strong><a aria-label=\"Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Treaty_on_the_Non-Proliferation_of_Nuclear_Weapons\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"rank-math-link\">Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons<\/a><\/strong>, they agreed to destroy all of them, turning one of the 40 silos into an open-air museum that showcases tens of missiles, weapons, tanks and allows you get down into the silo, to the actual control room from where missiles were launched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/IMG_20191014_124331-1024x768.avif\" type=\"image\/avif\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/IMG_20191014_124331-1024x768.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/IMG_20191014_124331-1024x768.jpg\" alt class=\"wp-image-25991\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The underground silo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/IMG_20191014_143259-1024x768.avif\" type=\"image\/avif\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/IMG_20191014_143259-1024x768.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/IMG_20191014_143259-1024x768.jpg\" alt class=\"wp-image-25987\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Down in the silo, in the actual underground control room from where missiles were launched<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p>Absolutely mind-blowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The entrance fee is <strong>about 400UAH<\/strong>, with tour guide included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The tour, nevertheless, is only available in Russian. If <strong>you want an English-speaking tour<\/strong>, you must book it through a tour operator. For that, we just stood at the main road going into that direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If coming <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/visit-kiev\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><strong>from K<\/strong><\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/visit-kiev\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\">yi<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/visit-kiev\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><strong>v<\/strong><\/a>, you will need to figure it out, but I am pretty sure that there are direct buses to Pervomaisk, and it should be more convenient because the museum is on the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We actually came from the eastern city of Kharkiv (517km) and since there weren\u2019t any connections, it was a very long 2-day journey &#8211; <em>Kharkiv-Kremenchuk-Kropuvnyysky-Pervomaisk<\/em> &#8211; combining both trains and marshrutkas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where to stay in Pervomaisk<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Pervomaisk is a shit hole of a town and we stayed in one of the few hotels you find in the city\u2019s main square. Kharkiv, an aesthetically attractive industrial city<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Kharkiv is an eastern city located less than 30km from the Russian border and my second favorite city in Ukraine after Kyiv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many travelers might not find Kharkiv a particularly amusing destination, however, as Kharkiv\u2019s main attractive lies on its high abundance of Soviet legacy, so if you are aiming at savoring an espresso in a cheesy caf\u00e9 while admiring some boring churches, Kharkiv might not be your destination of choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, Kharkiv isn\u2019t the average Soviet city filled with ugly concrete and brutalist buildings but, with its affluence of imposing Stalinist architecture, the city also manifests an elegant feel and sophisticated atmosphere, the reason why this is claimed to be the most aesthetically attractive industrial city in the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/visit-kharkiv-1024x683.avif\" type=\"image\/avif\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/visit-kharkiv-1024x683.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/visit-kharkiv-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"visit Kharkiv\" class=\"wp-image-25949\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Stalinist architecture in Kharkiv<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We actually visited Kharkiv on the day of my birthday, and I couldn\u2019t had been happier with the place we chose to celebrate it: we visited a tank factory, ate Vietnamese food with Vietnamese people in the Vietnamese district of Kharkiv, and partied in a local rock &amp; <\/strong>Located in Freedom Square, this Soviet building was built by the time Kharkiv was the capital of the Ukrainian SSR, and is seen as one of the greatest examples of post-war Soviet architecture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tank Factory &#8211; <\/strong>Kharkiv is the place where worldwide famous T-34 tank was produced and its factory is still fully functional. You can\u2019t get in but you can climb the wall and check out a pretty big tank graveyard.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kharkiv\u2019s metro system &#8211; <\/strong>Stunning, beautiful stations many of them featuring Lenins and other Soviet symbols and propaganda.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stalinist architecture &#8211; The city center has the most exquisite Stalinist buildings. It reminds me of<a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/visit-minsk\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><strong> Minsk<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vietnamese Market &#8211; <\/strong>In Kharkiv, there is one of the largest Vietnamese populations in Europe. Many of them decided to stay in the country after their contracts as guest workers expired after the dissolution of the USSR.
