All borders are open and can be easily crossed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>By boat &#8211;<\/strong> You can also come by ferry from Odesa (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/country\/ukraine\/\">Ukraine<\/a><\/strong>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to move around during your 7 days in Georgia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Marshrutka \u2013<\/strong> Marshrutka is what minibuses are called across former Soviet countries, including Georgia. They are the cheapest way to move around, they go pretty much anywhere and leave once they are full. You can travel by marshrutka to most places suggested in this Georgia itinerary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Train \u2013<\/strong> There is a train line that goes all the way to Zugdidi, Batumi and also to Armenia and Azerbaijan. You can book your train tickets at the train station itself but I bought mine online, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.matarebeli.ge\/en\/home\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"rank-math-link\">through this website<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Renting a car \u2013<\/strong> Very feasible and convenient. We used a local company named <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/parent.ge\/en\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"rank-math-link\">parent.ge<\/a><\/strong>, which is significantly cheaper than most international branches. Read <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/unusual-things-to-do-in-belarus\/\">the weirdest things to do in Belarus<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth is that Stalin was the only reason Gori appeared on the maps and, despite Stalin&#8217;s dark past and Russian-Georgian relations, the Georgians from Gori feel both love and hate towards the dictator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are interested in Stalin&#8217;s earlier history, do go to Gori to visit his house-museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to get to Gori from Tbilisi<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From Didube station, you can take a marshrutka for 3GEL and it takes a bit more than an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The cave-city of Uplistsikhe<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Uplistsikhe is an extremely underrated place in Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Located very close to Gori, Uplistsikhe is what is today called a cave city that used to be an important trade center during the Silk Road times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most travelers don&#8217;t like it because the cave and walls look too restored and fake, it is full of tourists and, basically, it can very boring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, to some extent, I agree. However, Uplistsikhe is in an awesome location, on the left bank of the Kura River, with stunning views of the valley and from where you get the best light for photography during sunset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since there is no public transportation to Gori after sunset, most tourists are gone before then, so we had the site pretty much by just ourselves and the best light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The entrance fee to the cave is 7GEL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to get to Uplitsikhe from Gori<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the bus station of Gori, take a marshrutka to Kvakhvreli, located a 20-minute ride away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full wp-image-24194\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/georgia-one-week-itinerary.avif\" type=\"image\/avif\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/georgia-one-week-itinerary.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/georgia-one-week-itinerary.jpg\" alt=\"Georgia one week itinerary\" class=\"wp-image-24194\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><span style=\"color: #808080; font-size: 10pt;\"><em>Uplitsikhe at sunset<\/em><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mtskheta, the holiest town in Georgia<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Just 20km from Tbilisi downtown, you find Mtskheta, a historical village and the most popular day trip from Tbilisi in any Georgia itinerary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Historical evidence shows that Mtskheta has been inhabited for 5,000 years and, 2,000 years ago, this was the center of the Pagan cult of Armazi which was a local version of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zoroastrianism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zoroastrianism<\/a><\/strong>, the official religion in the pre-Islamic Persian Empire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, it became an important center for Christianity and, today, the Georgian Orthodox Church has declared Mtskheta a Holy City that contains some churches that have become UNESCO World Heritage sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Churches to visit in Mtskheta<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Except for the first one &#8211; which is in the center of town &#8211; you will need a car to visit them.
