My personal experience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"1\">I have been to Iran twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first time, I barely spent 10 days there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the second trip, I spent 2 months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, I am planning to go a third time, and I am pretty sure there will be a fourth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Iran is amazing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the one hand, the country is huge and it is home to endless different things to see, from dreamy islands to alpine mountains, desert and historical cities. <em>just a guess<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These statistics are just insane for Iran, especially if we take into account that the Western media, especially American, has been portraying the country as the worst, most dangerous and repressive of all countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, historical Persian cities such <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/off-the-beaten-track-things-shiraz\/\">as Shiraz<\/a><\/strong>, Esfahan or Yazd, are filled with both tourist groups and independent travelers, perfectly lined souvenir stalls and cute boutique hotels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And this can only mean one thing: <strong>Iran is extremely safe.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To make the situation even more dramatic, Iran shot down a commercial <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/country\/ukraine\/\">Ukrainian<\/a><\/strong> plane but apparently, it was an accident and the world believes it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nobody knows what will eventually happen but it seems that the situation has calmed down and, according to several local sources, life in Iran today is just normal, with the exception of the occasional protests that tend to happen in the <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/things-to-do-in-tehran\/\"><strong>center of Tehran<\/strong><\/a>, that&#8217;s it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personally, I would still travel to Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter wp-image-12286 size-full\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/travel-iran.avif\" type=\"image\/avif\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/travel-iran.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/travel-iran.jpg\" alt=\"is Iran a safe country\" class=\"wp-image-12286\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><span style=\"color: #808080; font-size: 10pt;\"><em>The architecture is truly gorgeous<\/em><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"21\">The media: is Iran perceived as dangerous because of the Western media?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If anyone thinks Iran is a dangerous country, that is because of the media.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For decades, American newspapers have been selling a completely biased image of Iran, exclusively focused on nuclear weapons, religious fanatics, human rights abuse and, basically, a dictatorial regime.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Europe, it used to be the same story but I feel that they have softened their speech and today, while they are still talking about all the crazy things going on there, they are continuously publishing reports and chronicles talking about its great tourist attractions and people, and this is one of the reasons why many travelers have started to consider Iran a safe destination to travel to.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter wp-image-10463 size-full\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/tehran-tourist-attractions.avif\" type=\"image\/avif\"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/tehran-tourist-attractions.jpg\" type=\"image\/jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/tehran-tourist-attractions.jpg\" alt=\"is Iran safe to travel\" class=\"wp-image-10463\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><span style=\"color: #808080; Anti-American propaganda just outside of the former American embassy in Tehran<\/em><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not the case of the American media, however, especially with the current Administration, which keeps on contaminating public opinion with the idea that Iran is the ultimate arch-enemy and one of the unfriendliest countries on Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You would be surprised to know how many Americans believe that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, I have had a few small arguments on social media, like the day when that American dude replied to one of my tweets &#8211; <em>see below<\/em> &#8211; asking why would someone want to visit such a dangerous place and, to support his reasoning, he posted <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/world\/iran-regime-ramps-up-crackdown-on-persecuted-christians-after-us-sanctions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">one article from Fox News<\/a><\/strong>. Hilarious.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1180\" height=\"652\" src=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Snip20191128_2-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Snip20191128_2-1.png 1180w, https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Snip20191128_2-1-300x166.png 300w, https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Snip20191128_2-1-768x424.png 768w, https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Snip20191128_2-1-1024x566.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1180px) 100vw, 1180px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I am aware that this has been said over and over, but don&#8217;t trust what the media has to say about a country and do believe the hundreds of thousands of travelers who have been there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"22\">Problems: is it safe to travel to Iran now?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Is Iran safe to visit despite all the current problems?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure, Iran is safe for tourists, but we can&#8217;t ignore that there are some serious internal issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Iran is a dictatorial regime ruled by Islamic Law &#8211;<\/strong> As much as I love Iran, we can&#8217;t ignore that this is a repressive dictatorship that violates human rights every now and then. However, having a bad Government doesn&#8217;t make their people bad as well and, as long as you follow some simple rules &#8211; more on that later &#8211; you shouldn&#8217;t be worried about it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Violent protests (update 2019) &#8211;<\/strong> You probably heard about some <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/11\/iran-protests-600-words-191118060831036.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">violent protests in 2019<\/a><\/strong> which involved several dead civilians and the Government shutting down the internet for nearly a week. Sure, the Government&#8217;s response to demonstrators will always be repression and more repression, but this is happening across the world, including in Chile, and I don&#8217;t see Donald Trump complaining about it. The best you can do is to stay away from any public demonstrations.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Terrorist attacks &#8211;<\/strong> There have been some terrorist attacks in Iran, the last big one being in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2017_Tehran_attacks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2017 in Tehran<\/a><\/strong>, when several Iranians died. By nature, Shia people are more relaxed than Sunni, which means that, when it comes to religion, Iran is more liberal than <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/travel-oman\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\"><strong>countries<\/strong> <strong>like Oman<\/strong><\/a> or the United Arab Emirates, plus Iran has also a large population of atheists, more than any Arab country, as you will see it when you go there. True story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this post, Jackie wrote <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bohemianvagabond.com\/american-tourist-in-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">about American tourists in Iran<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"7\">Is driving safe in Iran?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Like in most <a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/category\/middle-east\/\"><strong>countries in the Middle East<\/strong><\/a>, the locals don&#8217;t really follow the traffic rules, so car accidents do abound.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, I felt that in places like Egypt or Saudi Arabia, the locals are crazier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Crossing the streets in Iran<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the potential threats most tourists face in Iran is crossing the street, especially <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/againstthecompass.com\/en\/things-to-do-in-tehran\/\">in Tehran<\/a><\/strong>, as crosswalks are completely useless so, when trying to cross, cars don&#8217;t stop and simply avoid you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first few times you do it, you think you are going to die but after some practice, you get used to it. In any case, it is always recommended to cross the road next to a local person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Public transportation in Iran<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The whole of Iran is really well-connected by a super-effective and efficient bus network, so it is the most popular method of transportation among independent travelers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two types of buses, normal and VIP and, in order to travel more safely, you should get the VIP one, as it only costs 20-30% more, which is a few more \u20ac and, since they are newer and bigger, they are definitely safer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#eaeaea\">Because of the sanctions, in Iran, most booking sites don\u2019t accept international foreign cards.
